On Monday’s Breitbart News Daily, SiriusXM host Alex Marlow asked Robert C. O’Brien, former U.S. representative to the United Nations, for his opinion of Hillary Clinton’s foreign policy leadership as secretary of state.
O’Brien replied, “The problem for Secretary Clinton is that she has a record, and a lot of people gave Matt Lauer a hard time at the Commander-in-Chief forum for being too tough on Hillary Clinton, but basically he went through her record.” He added:
If you start in the Middle East, when the Green Revolution took place in Iran, we did not stand with the Iranians in the streets, the young people. We stood with the mullahs. It took several days for President Obama and Secretary Clinton to even acknowledge that folks in Iran did not necessarily want to be ruled by these hardline mullahs.
And then she’s tied herself–and now takes credit for–the Iran nuclear deal, which is the worst appeasement since we allowed Hitler to rise. She’s totally tied in there. The Iranians are building ballistic missiles and trying to build intercontinental ballistic missiles, together with their nuclear program. She’s got that on her hands.
We were unable to obtain a Status of Forces agreement in Iraq, and the withdrawal of American forces set the stage for the rise of ISIS in Iraq and Syria, so all the hard-won battles in Fallujah and other places, in the Anbar province and the Sunni Triangle, were lost to ISIS. We’re now fighting those same wars again.
Libya has turned into a failed state. We don’t even have to get into Benghazi, where we lost four Americans because the Secretary hadn’t approved adequate security for Ambassador Stevens and his staff. It’s an absolute mess.
O’Brien said that while working as a foreign policy adviser for Mitt Romney’s campaign in 2012, his team studied how to undo four years of what President Obama had done, particularly to the military:
It takes a long time to get ships and aircraft built and to turn that around, to turn the cuts around, and we knew it would be very difficult after four years. After eight years, it’s going to be extraordinarily difficult, but it can be done.
What worries me is another four years of this type of foreign policy and national security policy under President Clinton. It would be an extraordinarily difficult task to restore American greatness, to get back on a “peace through strength” footing, if we had four more years of the current policy–and Secretary Clinton has tied herself very closely to President Obama’s policy.
Your point, Alex, is exactly right; it does take time, and President Obama’s had eight years to implement his policy. We’ve seen the results. It’s been disastrous around the world. Even Madeleine Albright, Clinton’s secretary of state, calls the world a mess now. We’re going to have to start turning this ship around, very quickly.
