Rick Reilly Mocks Phil Mickelson for Criticizing High Taxes

ESPN writer Rick Reilly, joining other writers who immediately started to mock Phil Mickelson for speaking out against California’s high taxes, made fun of Mickelson on Twitter on Tuesday, even creating a “#MickelsonProblems” hashtag.

Reilly tweeted that Mickelson’s “private jet” was getting “too big” to land on “some of these islands.” He also said Mickelson may “have to leave CA because his tax bracket is too high” and then snidely wrote, “Also, butlers are talking about a union.”

Even PGA Commissioner Tim Finchem, who was an economist in the liberal Jimmy Carter administration, said it was “not unique” for people to plan their lives around taxes and to leave states–like California–because of high taxes. But those in the media like Reilly immediately began slamming Mickelson for being a rich guy who was complaining about taxes, not realizing that higher taxes–as has been the case for professional golfers–can serve as a disincentive for people to achieve.
