Novak Djokovic had opportunities to break Andy Murray three times in the first set, but Murray survived to reach the tie-breaker at 6-6. Djokovic, the No. 1 player in the world, then double faulted to open the tie-breaker and Murray dominated the rest of the tie-breaker to take a one set to none lead in the Australian Open.
British tennis fans had waited 76 years for a Grand Slam title before Murray defeated Djokovic for the US Open title. Murray is now trying to make it two in a row.
Djokovic had better chances to break serve in the first set, but Murray was always able to come through on his serve.
In a championship that matched Murray’s incredible serving ability against the best return player in the world in Djokovic, it was Murray who seemed to have trouble challenging for a game of off Djokovic’s serve.
However, Djokovic opened the tie-breaker with a double fault, and after Murray won his two serves, Djokovic faulted on his first serve at 0-3, and Murray jumped on the second serve to take control at 4-0. From there, he worked Djokovic back and forth, until Djokovic finished the set with his 25th unforced error to spot Murray the set at just before 4 a.m. Eastern.
