Singh Withdraws from Waste Management Phoenix Open

A day after admitting he used deer antler spray and denying he knew the extract contained a substance banned on the PGA Tour, Vijay Singh withdrew from the Waste Management Phoenix Open golf tournament on Thursday.

Singh cited a back injury. TPC Scottsdale’s famed 16th hole is known for its raucous hecklers, and Singh surely would have received razzing and “the treatment” had he participated in the tournament.

On Wednesday, Singh said he was “angered” he had put himself in this situation and said he reviewed the list of ingredients when he first starting using the deer antler spray, which Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis has also been accused of using.

“In fact, when I first received the product, I reviewed the list of ingredients and did not see any prohibited substances,” Singh said. “I am absolutely shocked that deer-antler spray may contain a banned substance and am angry that I have put myself in this position. I have been in contact with the PGA Tour and am cooperating fully with their review of this matter. I will not be commenting further at this time.”

The PGA Tour is investigating the matter.
