Madness! No. 1 Goes Down–Again

For the fifth straight week, the top-ranked team in college basketball lost when Illinois closed the game on 13-2 run to stun Indiana on Thursday when Tyler Griffey scored the game-winning basket on an inbounds play with 0.9 seconds left in the game to give Illinois the 74-72 victory.

Indiana’s Cody Zeller fell asleep on the play. Indiana’s Victor Oladipo blocked what appeared to be a game-winning layup the play before to set up the eventual game-winning inbounds play.

With second-ranked Florida losing at Arkansas earlier in the week, Michigan is slated to take back the No. 1 ranking next week if they beat Wisconsin this weekend at Madison, WI. Indiana beat Michigan in a classic showdown last weekend to take the No. 1 ranking this week.

In a college basketball season in which no team is head and shoulders above the other, five top-ranked teams losing in successive weeks means the NCAA tournament will be wilder than it usually is.
