Major League Baseball’s spring training officially got underway on Monday when pitchers and catchers for at least three teams reported and started official team workouts.
Pitchers and catchers for most of the other franchises will report on Tuesday in spring training camps in Florida and Arizona.
The Los Angeles Dodgers, under a new ownership group that has made clear the Dodgers intend to bring in top talent at almost any price, and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, a team, under owner Arte Moreno, that signed former Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton a year after signing former St. Louis Cardinals great Albert Pujols in the offseason, will dominate some of the early headlines.
The Dodgers may outspend the New York Yankees, a team that will be forced to deal with Alex Rodriguez and yet another report that implicates him in a scandal involving performance-enhancing drugs.
The Washington Nationals, with two of the game’s brightest prospects in pitcher Stephen Strasburg and outfielder Bryce Harper, are coming off the franchise’s first playoff appearance in which they lost in heartbreaking fashion to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Atlanta Braves and the Toronto Blue Jays made huge offseason trades to make them legitimate contenders in the National League East and the American League East, respectively.
All these teams will be chasing the San Francisco Giants, the defending World Series champions.
