Red Wings Capitalize on Ducks Mistakes to Tie Series 1-1

The Detroit Red Wings survived a late comeback by the Anaheim Ducks to win game 2 in overtime 5-4.

The Red Wings came out in control. Justin Abdelkader scored 48 seconds into the game and a few minutes later Damien Brunner scored a goal to give the Red Wings a 2-0 lead. They went into the first intermission on a high note because the Ducks Saku Koivu was given a penalty for charging when the buzzer went off, allowing the Red Wings to start the second period on a power play. Johan Franzen scored a power play goal 1:04 into the second.

The Ducks scored their own power play goal at 10:53 when Koivu tipped in a goal from Teemu Selanne and Francois Beauchemin. It looked like they were given life, but again they ended the period on a penalty when Sheldon Souray was called for cross checking.

It was déjà vu. The Red Wings started the period on a power play and 20 seconds in Franzen scored his second power play goal, giving the Red Wings a 4-1 lead. They kept the lead until there was less than 13 minutes in the game and the Ducks finally showed up.

Ryan Getzlaf scored with a backhand goal at the 7:50 mark and Kyle Palmieri managed to get a wrist shot in at 12:31.

It was Bobby Ryan who tied it up for the Ducks at 17:38 with a tip-in goal. Pavel Datsyuk almost won it in regulation with 40 seconds remaining, but Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller easily stopped him.

But the Ducks did it all over again. They ended the third on another Souray penalty. This one was for slashing and meant the Red Wings would start overtime on the power play.

Like before, the Red Wings took advantage of the mistake and Gustav Nyquist scored a power play goal 1:21 into overtime, giving the Red Wings a 5-4 win and tying the series 1-1.

Game three is Saturday night in Detroit.
