International Soccer Star's Teammates to Wear Blackface to Protest Racism Against Him

Teammates of a black international soccer superstar who had racist chants hurled at him last weekend during a European soccer match will reportedly wear blackface in their next match to protest the racism against their star player.

Didier Drogba, the Ivory Coast native who is one of the greatest soccer players in the world and now plays for the Turkish club Galatasaray, had bananas thrown at him last weekend. In addition, the crowd in last weekend’s game in Turkey made monkey noises at him.

In a sign of solidarity, his white teammates have pledged “to wear blackface in their next match.”

A Turkish paper has printed images of what the soccer players would look like in blackface.

Drogba, who help to broker peace in the Ivory Coast, his home country, lashed out against the racist Fenerbahce fans over the weekend, saying they were not true soccer fans.

As Deadspin noted, “blackface obviously does not carry the same sociocultural history in Turkey as it does in the U.S.,” but it will still nonetheless be a curious way of expressing “solidarity.”
