The Chicago Blackhawks started very slowly in game 1 of their Western Conference Semifinals against the Detroit Red Wings, but found their groove and won 4-1.
Detroit had fresher legs since they just eliminated the Ducks on Sunday while it has been a week since Chicago played when they eliminated the Minnesota Wild. The first period was slow until Marian Hossa scored a power play goal at 9:03, but Detroit took away their fire two minutes later with a goal from Damien Brunner.
As soon as the second period started Chicago showed the world why they are the best team in the league. If it was not for Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard Chicago would have blown out Detroit. No one scored in the second period, but it was not for lack of trying. Chicago outshot Detroit 17-5 in the second period and 23-12 overall through two periods.
Howard could only do so much. 8:02 into the third Johnny Oduya scored a goal and three minutes later Marcus Kruger added another one to make it 3-1. Patrick Sharp capped it off with an empty net goal at 19:11.
Overall Chicago outshot Detroit 42-21. Detroit did have numerous chances, but Chicago goalie Corey Crawford did not allow the Brunner goal to shake his nerves. Howard stopped 38 out of 41 shots.
