Manziel: I Overslept, Wasn't Hungover

Since winning the biggest award in college football, it seems like almost nothing has gone right for reigning Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel. The controversial signal caller had an opportunity to clear the air Tuesday at the SEC Media Days, considered by many to be college football’s unofficial kickoff.

Prior to the press conference where he was set to represent his Texas A&M Aggies, Manziel took some time to speak with ESPN’s Joe Tessitore on College Football Live and fielded a variety of questions about his summer of fun and his most recent departure from Peyton Manning’s Passing Camp.

“The main reason for going home, for me, was that it has been a busy summer,” Manziel told Tessitore.

When asked for more information on the circumstances that surrounded his departure from the camp, Maziel replied with a short statement and denied he was hungover.

“I probably bit off more than I can chew in July” Manziel said. “I have been traveling and going a lot of places. I just overslept. I made a mistake and didn’t wake up in time.”

Manziel’s answer did not satisfy many of his critics or speculators who have assumed that alcohol was involved. The quarterback pivoted and pointed out that he has been invited back for next year’s camp.

While the antics of the “Johnny Football” have presented a major distraction for Texas A&M, the Aggies will need to be fully focused when they face Alabama in College Station on September 14. The rematch of the game that was Tide’s one loss as well as the primary catalyst behind Manziel’s Heisman candidacy will be one of the most highly anticipated early season contests in recent memory.

Many have circled this game as a defining moment in the race for the national championship, and Alabama will be coming off a bye week after their first game against Virginia Tech. The outcome of this game could set the trajectory for the team hoping to play in Pasadena next January and could go a long way towards restoring Manziel’s draft stock as well as his hopes for a Heisman repeat.
