Newspaper Compares Redskins Flag to Swastika, Confederate Flags

The New York Daily News published a cartoon featuring a Washington Redskins flag logo alongside of the Confederate Army war flag and the Nazi Germany swastika flag with the caption “Archaic Symbols of Pride and Heritage” in making reference to the recent controversy surrounding the Redskins team name.

One interpretation of the cartoon is to imply that the common person cannot be quietly supportive of initiatives anymore but instead must be vehemently against the use of the name and make it comparable to a Hitler-level of slur.

Another perspective that can be taken is that it is insulting to both the black and Jewish communities to compare the use of the name “Redskins” to the slaughtering of 6 million Jews, especially when the name polls an 80% approval among Native Americans.

President Barack Obama supported a name change by the Washington Redskins, recently telling the Associated Press, “I don’t think there are any Redskins fans that mean offense. I’ve got to say that if I were the owner of the team and I knew that there was a name of my team – even if it had a storied history – that was offending a sizeable group of people, I’d think about changing it.” The president then continued to say, “I don’t know whether our attachment to a particular name should override the real legitimate concerns that people have about these things.”

The NFL is scheduled to meet with the Oneida Indian Nation on November 22nd in New York, where NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will discuss the use of the Redskins name, a meeting that will likely take place sooner as the temperature around the controversy rises.

Breitbart Sports has reached out to the artist, Tom Stiglich, but have not received a response.
