Sochi Olympics 2014: U.S.-Born Barista Will Play Hockey for Switzerland

A barista in Washington, D.C. will play hockey for Switzerland in the Winter Olympics.

Jessica Lutz–“born in the United States, raised in Rockville, educated in Connecticut”–will be able to do so because she has dual citizenship. Lutz’s father was born in Switzerland before moving to the “Washington area more than 30 years ago.”

Lutz also had to establish residency in Switzerland for consecutive years, which she did when she stayed in the country for “nearly three years before moving back to Washington last spring.”

According to the Washington Post, she is a barista at “Coffee Bar on S Street NW near 14th,” and, regardless of how Switzerland fares, she “plans to spend a week after the Winter Games with her family in Switzerland before returning to Washington.” She plans to begin a “full-time nursing program this summer,” in the United States this summer after the Games.

Switzerland lost its first game against Canada on Saturday 5-0.
