Sabine Lisicki Advances at Wimbledon, Defeats Ana Ivanovic

LONDON–Finally, nineteenth seed Sabine Lisicki defeated eleventh seed Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 on Monday in a Wimbledon match that lasted over three days, if one takes into consideration Sunday was an off day, with two interruptions.

The match began on Saturday after a long rain delay, but was suspended due to darkness in the beginning of the second set. In fact, Ivanovic was booed when she wanted to end the match. The women left when it was 6-4, 1-1.

The ladies resumed at 1:00PM BST and at first it appeared the delay helped Ivanovic. She broke Lisicki two times and kept her momentum going after Lisicki double faulted five times in the second set. Rain interrupted play when Ivanovic was up 5-2 and the ladies were at 40-40. Ivanovic came back to win the set.

Lisicki won the first three games of the third set, but Ivanovic broke through in the fourth game to win one. Ivanovic did not break Lisicki, but was broken two out of five times. This time, Lisicki’s double faults did not cost her, and she won the match on an ace in only 27 minutes.

In her last five appearances at Wimbledon, Lisicki reached at least the quarterfinals. In 2013, she shocked the world when she eliminated Serena Williams, but lost to Marion Bartoli in the finals.
