LONDON, United Kingdom–There will be new Wimbledon champions in 2014. Grigor Dimitrov defeated defending champion Andy Murray in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6(7), 6-2 on Wednesday.
Dimitrov completely dominated the match, including the second set tiebreak. He broke Murray five out of nine times and was able to save his serves. Murray had two opportunities to break Dimitrov, but only broke him once, and that was in the second set. Murray committed 37 unforced errors in the match. His play was sloppy and he never truly looked comfortable on the court.
“He was the better player from start to finish,” Murray said about Dimitrov.
Murray plans on practicing more and said he enjoys working with his new coach Amelie Mauresmo.
“I need to go away and make a lot of improvements,” Murray said at the press conference. “I just did not play well today.”
Dimitrov was incredibly calm after having just ousted the defending champion.
“I have two more matches to play, hopefully!” Dimitrov told the BBC right after the match. “I’m just trying to stay on course.”
Three of the last four matches on Centre Court were upsets. On Tuesday, Angelique Kerber upset Dimitrov’s girlfriend Maria Sharapova and Nick Kyrgios upset world number-one Rafael Nadal. Last year’s women’s champion–Marion Bartoli–retired after the tourney.
Dimitrov will play the winner of the Novak Djokovic and Marin Cilic match in the semifinals.
