Michael Sam Not Claimed on Waivers

Michael Sam, attempting to become the first openly gay player in the NFL, was not claimed on waivers on Sunday after he was cut on Saturday by the St. Louis Rams. The team had to cut four players in order to set its 53-man roster, and Sam was one of the four players cut.

Sam tweeted on Saturday: “I want to thank the entire Rams organization and the city of St. Louis for giving me this tremendous opportunity and allowing me to show I can play at this level. I look forward to continuing to build on the progress I made here toward a long and successful career. The most worthwhile things in life rarely come easy, this is a lesson I’ve always known. The journey continues.”

Now that he has cleared waivers, Sam can sign with any team’s practice squad.
