Sometimes the internet has to work hard to turn a cringe-worthy, meme-laden, moment of social media mockery into a trending sensation.

But, not this time.

Fergie, the singer known to many as one-fourth of the Black Eyed Peas, sung the national anthem with all the sultry suggestion of a Vegas lounge act on Sunday night. She was on-hand to sing the Star-Spangled Banner before the NBA All-Star Game, but ended up doing something that probably caused Francis Scott Key to roll over in his grave.

Take a listen:

Yuck, right?! The performance was only redeemed by the tidal wave of hilarity it sparked on social media, as fans of all backgrounds weighed-in. The expression on the player’s faces basically told the story:

This is probably not the way Kevin Hart it planned out:

Team LeBron beat Team Stephen 148-145 in the game. Not that anyone was left alive after the anthem to see it.

UPDATE: On Monday, Fergie made a statement about her performance.

“I’ve always been honored and proud to perform the national anthem and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA,” the Black Eyed Peas singer told TMZ on Monday. “I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best.”
