MCALLEN, Texas – Federal agents arrested an illegal alien who had previously been convicted on drug trafficking after they found more than 5,800 rounds of ammunition destined for Mexico in his home.

Agents with U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) arrested 36-year-old Francisco Javier Espinoza Esquivel at a home in the border city of Pharr, court records obtained by Breitbart Texas revealed.

The arrest came after the agents went to Espinoza’s home and got permission to search the house, as he gave them permission he told them that he had stored ammunition in a room and more in a tool box, the court records revealed.

Overall the agents found 5,860 rounds of 7.62×39 ammunition, which is commonly used for AK-47 type rifles. Espinoza also told the agents that he knew that since he was in the country illegally he couldn’t purchase ammunition so he would have his wife who is a legal resident buy it online for him, the court documents revealed.

Espinoza also told the agents that he had a prior drug smuggling conviction and that the ammunition was destined for Mexico. While the court documents don’t specify, as Breitbart Texas previously reported, the border cities of Reynosa and Matamoros are undergoing a fierce war within the ranks of the Gulf Cartel which has led to almost daily large scale gun battles.
