CHARLESTON, South Carolina — Hip liberals, including some of Hollywood’s elite, have found a new hero: Bree Newsome, the woman who removed the Confederate flag from the South Carolina capitol Saturday morning.

The video of her polite refusal to obey police asking her to get off the pole and her subsequent flag takedown has gone viral, providing imagery and symbolism of defiance of “White Supremacy” for the Black Lives Matter movement. And it’s no accident—the soft focus imagery and quickly posted video were part of Bree Newsome’s climb to national fame as a black entertainer and media figure.

Newsome’s move was classic Hollywood self-promotion: the sort of move that allows an artist struggling to stand out to get instant, national recognition. Newsome seized the moment and it worked: The Industry noticed.

Hollywood careers live and die on constant media promotions. Ava DuVernay, the director of 2014’s acclaimed film civil rights pic Selma tweeted out her admiration and also got the trade newpaper the Hollywood Reporter to talk aboyt Ava DuVernay.

Ms. DuVernay’s line about “the motion picture about a black superhero I admire” is a sly reference to that fact that the Selma director is now jockeying to heln a Marvel Comics superhero movie, the upcoming Black Panther. Hip-Hop magnate Russell Simmons simply posted the hashtag:

And what iconic left-wing symbolic moment would be complete without rich-white-man Michael Moore’s involvement?

The moment provided instant fame for Bree Newsome, who frames herself on her Twitter biography “Filmmaker – Singer – Songwriter – Freedom Fighter” and whose BreeNewsome.com website provides some career highlights.

Ms. Newsome’s resume makes a great case for the immense opportunities that black Americans have today: she’s attended top university, received scholarships and worked with corporate powerhouse ad agencies,

Newsome is a graduate of New York University’s prestigious Tisch School of the Arts where she received a BFA in Film & Television. While still in high school, Newsome created an animated short, THE THREE PRINCES OF IDEA which earned her a $40,000 scholarship from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Ms, Newsome clearly undestands promotion and advertising: she worked for one of the top ad agencies in the world; no small irony since she promotes herself in a shirt with the slogan People Over Money.

Based on her work as an undergraduate student at New York University, Newsome was invited in 2011 to serve as the first ever Artist-in-Residence at Saatchi & Saatchi, a global creative communications and advertising company headquartered in New York.

Despite the education, scholarships and Artist-in-Residence position it’s important to keep it real…real angry. After all, left-wing street cred goes a long way in Hollywood .The flag stunt wasn’t Newsome’s first arrest:

A staunch advocate for human rights and social justice, Newsome was arrested last year during a sit-in at the North Carolina State Capitol where she spoke out against the state’s recent attack on voting rights. She continues to work as an activist and youth organizer in North Carolina, serving in the capacity of Western Field Organizer for the youth-led organization Ignite NC.

Appropriately for a career in Hollywood, Bree is not a fan of conservatives or Republicans. She made an Anti Mitt Romney music video in 2012. As the video description says:

In August 2012, Bree wrote & recorded a rap song, “Shake It Like an Etch-a-Sketch!” which skewers presidential candidate Mitt Romney & criticizes the Republican Party for policies which promote classism and bigotry. She then directed and edited a music video for the song which drew immediate attention from the Huffington Post which declared the video “great” and saying, “the video doesn’t pull any punches and its subtext just might ring true to the ears of voting Americans.

If you ever wants to see an actor portraying Mitt Romney twerking, here’s your chance.

Ms. Newsome’s Twitter account immediately promoted a song during the Ferguson uprising — a hip-hop song about defiance against authority and white oppression that now available as a free download on SoundCloud.

Ms. Newsome has not yet announced her next project.
