A fierce firefight in a Mexican rural community near the Texas border resulted in the death of nine gunmen. The are believed to be part of one of the factions of the Gulf Cartel.

The fierce shootout took place over the weekend near the rural community of Santa Polonia. The small town is located near the Mexican border city of Rio Bravo, information provided to Breitbart Texas by the Tamaulipas government revealed.

A group of police officers and soldiers who make up the Fuerza Tamaulipas task force had been patrolling the rural roads between Rio Bravo and Valle Hermoso when they spotted multiple vehicles with gunmen who began shooting at the officers in an effort to get away.

Mexican authorities fought off the attack killing nine of the gunmen. The bodies of eight of the gunmen were found in various parts of the rural road, while the ninth was found inside a truck he had apparently been using.

Authorities seized 9 assault rifles, two vehicles, and other tactical equipment.

While government officials have stopped identifying the cartel that the slain or captured gunmen belong to, the area of Rio Bravo is under the control of the Gulf Cartel.

That criminal organization as previously reported by Breitbart Texas has been going through a series of internal struggles since February with two rival factions of the Gulf Cartel, Los Metros from Reynosa and Los Ciclones from Matamoros fighting over territory.
