LA GRULLA, Texas — A shooting on the Texas border has left two men dead and two others with critical gunshot injuries.

The Texas border shooting appears to have started shortly after Thursday afternoon near the border town of La Grulla when a Texas DPS trooper came across a man laying on the ground with gunshot injuries, said Starr County District Attorney Omar Escobar, whose agents are working part of the investigation.

Breitbart Texas spoke with Escobar Thursday night shortly after the double homicide.

According to information released by the Starr County Sheriff’s Office, witnesses claimed to have seen a white four door pickup leaving the area.

U.S. Border Patrol agents near the Rio Grande River, south of La Grulla, found the vehicle with the bodies of two deceased men who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, Escobar said.

Not far from where authorities found the pickup with the two bodies, authorities found a fourth man with gunshots injuries who is believed to have been the driver of the truck, Escobar said.

The two injured men were flown to hospitals in nearby Hidalgo County so they could receive emergency care for the gunshot injuries.

Preliminary information points to the four men knowing each other. Investigators are working to confirm if the shooting was in fact a shootout between the four men or if other individuals were involved.

In the three crime scenes authorities have recovered a weapon and continue to gather additional information on the case, Escobar said.

The investigation remains in the preliminary stages and is being directed by the DA’s investigators who re working hand-in-hand with Texas Rangers, local police, Starr County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies.

While authorities said it is too early to confirm if the shooting was related to drug trafficking activity, the border county of Starr has historically been a busy drug corridor used by criminal organizations looking to smuggle drugs or illegal aliens into the U.S. before moving them to northern cities.

Last year, Breitbart Texas was on scene when a Gulf Cartel operative and member of the Texas Syndicate engaged law enforcement in a shootout in the border city of La Joya, just east of Starr County.
