The former First Assistant for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is aligning with his former boss, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, but instead of working directly for him again, he will serve as the executive director for a super PAC supporting his presidential campaign.
Chip Roy recently resigned his position from the Office of the Texas Attorney General (OAG). The OAG announced his resignation on Wednesday, as reported by Breitbart Texas. He served as the First Assistant to Attorney General Paxton for his first fifteen months of office.
Roy is joining the Trusted Leadership PAC, a new fundraising super PAC.
The PAC was first announced by USA Today. As reported, four political action committees that include some adaptation of the name Keep the Promise, formed the new PAC. President of Keep the Promise I, Kellyanne Conway said at the time, “We are pleased that with so many headwinds against him, we were able to help [Cruz] bring this to a two-person race.” The three other super PACs are Keep the Promise PAC, Keep the Promise III, and Keep the Promise to Veterans.
Robert Mercer, a New York Hedge-fund magnate, put more than $11 million into the Keep the Promise I PAC. As reported by Bloomberg Politics and others, Mercer is a powerful force in U.S. Politics. He has donated at least $32 million to conservatives who are vying for elected office. He was reported to have spent “tens of millions more,” in donations to conservative organizations.
Bloomberg Politics reported that in July this group of super PACS reported raising $38 million for the Texas senator’s presidential bid. Toby Neugebauer, founder of a Houston investment firm and Farris Wilks, another Texan who became a billionaire as a result of the fracking business, joined with Mercer to start the Keep the Promise PAC.
USA Today reported that Keep the Promise III received $15 million in 2015 from Farris and Dan Wilks and their wives, and Keep the Promise to Veterans was started in February 2016 with the assistance of former Texas governor Rick Perry. Keep the Promise II was reported to have been started with $10 million from Neugebauer.
As reported by Breitbart Texas on Wednesday, Chip Roy resigned as First Assistant to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to “pursue other endeavors,” according to a statement obtained by Breitbart Texas.
While he was at the OAG, Roy managed over nine lawsuits against President Obama and his administration, supported the appeals for Texas House Bill 2 which was argued at the U.S. Supreme Court this past week, and was credited with leading the fight against human trafficking in the Lone Star State.
