Texas Congressman Ted Poe (R-TX) announced he will be spending the summer congressional recess in Texas fighting leukemia. The former Texas criminal court judge will continue his duties as he fights the disease.

“I have been diagnosed with leukemia,” the five-term representative said in a statement obtained by Breitbart Texas. “It is my intention to beat cancer and have a full recovery and continue to represent the people of Texas.”

Poe will receive treatment from the world’s top cancer hospital, the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in the Texas Medical Center. The slogan of the center is “Make Cancer History.”

“I am fortunate enough to be treated by the finest  physicians in the world right here in Houston at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center,” Poe stated.

The congressman has been a strong conservative during his tenure representing the people of the Texas 2nd Congressional District. He has sponsored several bills to strengthen border security, protect law enforcement officers and punish criminals for their crimes.

Poe became famous for his 5-minute House Floor speeches which he concludes with this iconic “and that’s just the way it is.”

The Texas representative service on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the House Committee on the Judiciary. He serves as chairman of the Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade. He is also a member of the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations.

One bill sponsored by Rep. Poe of particular importance is a bill to apply financial pressure to countries that refuse to take back their citizens who have been ordered deported from the United States. Nearly one million illegal immigrants remain in the United States after being ordered deported. One of the main reasons for their continued presence in the country is their home country’s refusal to repatriate them, Breitbart Texas reported.

Poe recently spoke at a ceremony honoring fallen police officers. The occasion was a candlelight ceremony at the Texas Peace Officers’ Memorial Monument in Austin, Breitbart Texas reported in May.

“Tonight we not only mourn for our brothers in sisters in blue whom we lost, we stand together in tribute,” the Houston area congressman said during the Sunday evening candlelight service. “We stand united that in our freedom loving state and nation, good will always triumph over evil.”

The always positive Poe said in his statement on Wednesday, “It is my intention to beat cancer and have a full recovery and continue to represent the people of Texas. Thank you in advance for your thoughts and your prayers.”

“The Good Lord will fix this, I believe. And that’s just the way it is.”
