NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – Louisiana’s leading Democrat contender in the state’s open U.S. Senate race said he would not discuss his thoughts on Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
Foster Campbell, who is running to replace conservative Sen. David Vitter (R-LA), told the Advocate that talking about Clinton was a “distraction.”
“This is a race about Louisiana,” Campbell said. “Talking about Hillary Clinton distracts people.”
Campbell said he would not speak of an endorsement for either Clinton or Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
In a crowded U.S. Senate race, Campbell is just about the only candidate who refuses to speak of, much less endorse, a presidential candidate.
Based on a recent poll by Hayride, Campbell is the leading Democrat in the race, running at 16 percent–trailing moderate Republican Treasurer, John Kennedy, who garnered 27 percent.
Kennedy told the Advocate he supports Trump–saying he agreed with the GOP nominee’s plans to repeal Obamacare; 2nd Amendment protection; and his support for the pro-life movement.
The race’s other prominent Democrat contender, New Orleans attorney Caroline Fayard, proudly said she supported Clinton.
Fayard has a history with the Clintons, working for them as an intern in the White House in the 1990s.
When Fayard ran previously for Lt. Governor in the state, former President Bill Clinton contributed to her campaign.
Fayard’s father, wealthy Democrat donor Calvin Fayard, has been a reliable contributor to the Clintons, as well as other Democrats like liberal Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY).
Congressman John Fleming (R-LA) voiced strong support for Trump, saying he was very much in favor of the New York real estate mogul’s plans to secure the country’s southern border.
“He wants to bring lawfulness to our borders,” Fleming told the Advocate. “I agree that we should not have sanctuary cities. He has a rational immigration policy to follow the laws we’ve had for a long time.”
Fleming also said he agreed with Trump’s positions on trade policy, saying “I agree that while we should have trade with other countries, it should be an even playing field or we should at least be equally competitive with our competitors.”
