An off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer reportedly shot two armed robbery suspects after they assaulted him.
The would-be armed robbers approached the off-duty officer from behind as he walked along First Street in Acadia, California Friday night. Shortly after 8 p.m., the suspects came up behind the officer, striking him in the head several times. They then pointed a gun at him and demanded his property, according to an article published by the Los Angeles Times.
Fearing for his life, the CBP officer pulled his department-issued service weapon several shots at the three teenage assailants. He wounded two of the suspects. The third suspect fled the scene. Police arrested the teenage boy not far from the scene of the attack.
Emergency personnel transported the wounded boys to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment for their gunshot wounds.
The CBP officer “thought the subjects were going to rob and shoot him so he retrieved his department-issued handgun,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Caroline Rodriguez told reporters in a written statement. Deputies recovered one handgun at the scene.
The suspects face charges of armed robbery, officials stated.
The assailants struck the off-duty CBP officers in the head several times. He received facial bruising but did not require medical attention, Rodriguez explained.
Officials reported the ages of the suspects as two 14-year-olds and one 15-year-old. No other descriptions were given about the suspects.
The Los Angeles Times article did not reveal if the CBP officer was in uniform or civilian clothes at the time of the attack.
Earlier this week, Breitbart Texas reported that U.S. Border Patrol Isaac Morales died after being attacked by a man Department of Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly described as a “cartel member.” The apparently unprovoked attack occurred while Morales was off-duty. He and his wife, along with a couple of friends, were leaving a bar when the attacker allegedly assaulted Morales’ wife. Morales sustained a fatal knife wound to his eye that punctured his brain stem. He died four days after the assault.
