MONTERREY, Nuevo Leon — A Mexican cartel operator arrested earlier this month is one of the suspects tied to the murder of a cartel attorney in South Lake, Texas.

The Mexican military arrested Luis “El Mora” Ramirez Bautista in early June in San Pedro, a rich suburb in the Monterrey metropolitan area. According to information released by the Nuevo Leon Attorney General’s Office, Ramirez Bautista has been connected to the assassination of Gulf Cartel operator and attorney Juan Jesus Guerrero Chapa in the wealthy North Texas suburb of South Lake.

Guerrero Chapa had been the Mexican attorney for Gulf Cartel boss Osiel Cardenas Guillen and lived in South Lake until his murder at a shopping center in May 2013, Breitbart Texas reported. That murder led to the conviction of 56-year-old Jesus Gerardo Ledezma Chapa, his cousin 60-year-old Jose Luis Cepeda Cortez, and 32-year-old Jesus Gerardo Ledezma Campano (Ledezma Chapa’s son). Ledezma Chapa and Cepeda Cortez were each sentenced to life in prison while the younger Ledezma Campano was sentenced only to 20 years in prison for having testified against his father and uncle.

The trio of relatives reportedly spent six months tracking Guerrero Chapa throughout Dallas until a pair of cartel killers carried out the hit outside of a shopping mall and were able to escape. The recently captured Ramirez Bautista was described by Nuevo Leon authorities as one of the organizers and bank-rollers behind the hit.

Mexican authorities searched for Ramirez Bautista, a top-level operator for the Beltran Leyva Cartel who was based in San Pedro, in connection with the execution of two local Mexican police officer including a commander who had been targeted for refusing to work for the cartel. As Breitbart Texas reported, in late May, a team of cartel gunmen in two vehicles pulled up to a gas station and opened fire on a police SUV. Inside the vehicle, Police Commander Cesar Daniel Camacho-Rodriguez and his driver, Officer Orlando Robledo Castillo, were caught off guard and died in a hail of gunfire. A video published by this outlet revealed the moment of the murder when the gunmen carry out the hit and drive off with complete impunity.

Editor’s Note: Breitbart Texas traveled to the Mexican States of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities.  The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart Texas’ Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and in their original Spanish. This article was written by Tony Aranda from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.
