The San Antonio police chief lashed out at “police haters” following the murder of one of his officers this week. The killing of one officer and critical wounding of a second left the department shaken and the chief angry.

“I’m angry at the police haters,” San Antonio Chief of Police William McManus told reporters. “I’m sick of the police haters. We protect them. We defend them, and they give us the big ‘F-you.’ And I’m sick of it.”

His comments come following the murder of Officer Miguel I. Moreno and critical wounding of his partner, Officer Julio Cavazos, by a suspect they wanted to question about a possible auto burglary, Breitbart Texas reported. “I’m at a loss for words to describe what kind of a tragedy this is. Two police officers gunned down for no reason,” McManus said following Moreno’s death.

The two officers got out of their patrol car to ask two men about a car that appeared to be broken into. As they got out of the car, one of the suspects, later identified as Andrew Bice, pulled a gun from his waistband and shot Moreno in the face, Click2Houston reported. Cavazos also took fire as he attempted to pull Moreno to safety. He then returned fire, striking Bice in the buttocks. Bice fled the area and appeared to have shot himself in the head a few blocks away.

Police took the second suspect into custody without incident.

After viewing the body cam video, McManus said, “I have never seen such evil, such calculation and such intent in a situation like that. I don’t know how that much evil can get into one person.”

The chief advised his officers to “be on their guard” as they approach people.

“Expect the worst could happen because it could, and then de-escalate from there,” Chief McManus concluded.

Moreno became the 65th officer to die in the line of duty this year. He is the 24 to die from being shot by a suspect, according to the Officer Down Memoria Page.
