The Southern Baptist Convention offered to cover the funeral expenses for all 26 victims killed in the shooting inside a Texas church.
The Daily Mail reports that the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention sent chaplains to Sutherland Springs to assist those in need after gunman Devin Patrick Kelley killed 26 people and injured 20 others when he opened fire inside First Baptist Church.
The Southern Baptists of Texas Convention’s director of disaster relief, Scottie Stice, said that “lots of healing needs to take place” in the Sutherland Springs community following the massacre.
“It’s a pretty somber place today,” Stice said in a post on the mission board’s website. “We’ve got chaplains at the church responding to the needs of the community and the families impacted by the senseless slaughter.”
The Southern Baptists are not the only group giving money towards the victims’ funerals.
The Texas Crime Victims’ Compensation Fund, which is administered through the state attorney general’s office, is giving $6,500 for each victim killed in the shooting towards funeral expenses.
“In addition to that, there is a company that has come forward that has agreed to donate all their caskets to all of the victims, and we are grateful for that person and their service to our community,” Wilson County District Attorney Audrey Louis told KXAN.
