Mexican authorities investigating how one of their elite federal drug enforcement agents was kidnapped and killed near Cancun. The murder comes days after cartel gunmen kidnapped two others in the coastal state of Nayarit.

Mexican federal law enforcement sources revealed to Breitbart Texas that late last week, 27-year-old Hugo Enrique Rafael Peña went missing and was discovered hours later–shot multiple times, blindfolded with tape, and hands tied. According to police file 65/2018, authorities found 11 9mm bullet casings at the scene.

Peña, a Mexican Federal Police agent, had been working undercover targeting the street-level distribution of drugs in Cancun, Quintana Roo. His murder comes shortly after the Mexican government deployed nearly 300 federal officers to bolster patrols in the tourist hotspot. The measure comes after the city saw 38 murders in January and more than 200 tied to cartel activity in 2017.

The murder of the federal police officer comes days after two federal investigators were kidnapped in Nayarit. As Breitbart Texas reported, cartel gunmen forced the agents to make a video where they claimed the government was unlawfully victimizing organized crime members.

Editor’s Note: Breitbart Texas traveled to the Mexican States of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities.  The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart Texas’ Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and in their original Spanish. This article was written by Tony Aranda from Nuevo León.
