Border Patrol agents arrested a Canadian man after he illegally crossed the border into Vermont. The man has prior convictions in Canada for manslaughter and other crimes.

Agents assigned to the Newport Station received a tip on April 25 that a man illegally crossed from Canada. The agents arrived in the Pelow Hill area of Derby Line, Vermont, and saw a man walking south from the border area, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The agents stopped the man and began questioning him. At first, the man identified himself as a Canadian citizen but reportedly provided a false name. Agents arrested him when he did not have any immigration documentation and took him to the Newport Station for investigation.

A biometric check uncovered the man’s true identity to be 41-year-old Patrick Morin. Agents learned the man has an extensive criminal history that includes a conviction for manslaughter. He also has a warrant for leaving Ottawa and exiting that country without permission, officials stated.

“The quick response by the agents resulted in the immediate arrest of a known criminal,” said Newport Station Patrol Agent in Charge Richard Ross. “This arrest is a great example of why the work of our Border Patrol agents along the northern border is so important.”

Officials said that Morin will face prosecution for illegal entry without inspection. If convicted, he could spend up to six months in a U.S. federal prison before being turned over to Canadian officials.
