PIEDRAS NEGRAS, Coahuila — Members of the elite police unit Fuerza Coahuila are currently under investigation for their alleged role in letting human smugglers operate in this border city.

The team of police officers were sent to Saltillo, where they will face an investigation and possible criminal charges. The case comes soon after the regional delegate for Mexico’s National Immigration Institute (INM) and two of his top officers were called for a similar inquiry, Breitbart Texas reported.

State law enforcement sources revealed to Breitbart Texas that the case began when the squad of Fuerza Coahuila officers arrived at a stash house as agents with the INM were raiding the place. Inside, authorities found 65 migrants from Central America and Mexico.

When federal authorities interviewed the migrants, they learned the team from Fuerza Coahuila was in the house days before but did not arrested anyone. The state cops met with the caretaker and then left. It remains unclear if the human smuggler bribed the state cops.

That case mirrors the investigation into the INM delegate Rafael Rodriguez Charua and two of his agents who are accused of releasing a human smuggler and two migrants from Ecuador after they were stopped. The three individuals were later arrested.

In February, a former state police commander was outed for taking monthly bribes from human smugglers in exchange for protection. The allegations came out during the trial of one of the human smugglers, Breitbart Texas reported.

The border city of Piedras Negras continues to be a bustling human smuggling corridor where various criminal organizations often fight for regional control.

Editor’s Note: Breitbart Texas traveled to the Mexican States of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities.  The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart Texas’ Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and in their original Spanish. This article was written by “J.M. Martinez” from Coahuila.
