Newspaper Puts Virgin Mary In Bikini, Sunglasses

If you look at the image above, there is no question that the Santa Fe Reporter got its inspiration for the cover of their Summer Guide 2013 issue from the Virgin of Guadalupe, one of the most sacred and revered images in the Catholic faith. Naturally, because there is no penalty in media or popular culture for denigrating Christianity, the newspaper’s editor stands by the image:

The intent of our Summer Guide cover design was not to insult or denigrate any religion or ethnicity, but rather to incorporate an important part of Santa Fe’s culture into an image that also unites other diverse cultures that flourish in our city.

No doubt, next year’s Summer Guide 2014 will do the same with the prophet Mohammed, Barack Obama’s “Hope” poster, or the rainbow-colored gay flag.
