On Monday’s broadcast of “Late Night with Seth Meyers” on NBC, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi reacted to a claim from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) that under proposed legislation by Democrats in Congress to roll back the effects of the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision, that “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels could be thrown in jail if it is enacted.
Cruz had taken to the floor of the House and railed against the legislation and accused the bill’s proponents of criminalizing free speech. But according to Pelosi, that’s not the case and if such a law is passed, it would diversify the U.S. Congress.
“But the fact is, I don’t know if he didn’t know what he was talking about or if he intentionally wanted to use a scare tactic,” Pelosi said. “But that is as far from the truth as it could be. The fact is, we all should be working to overturn Citizens United and reduce the role of money in politics. And I guarantee you this: You reduce the role of money in politics, increase the level of civility — you will elect more women, more young people, more minorities, more LGBT community people to the Congress of the United States. It’s very important.”
