NY Audience Laughs at Dem Cand For War on Woman Line

The audience at Thursday’s debate between candidates in New York’s 23rd Congressional district laughed at Democratic candidate Martha Robertson’s claim that her opponent, Republican Congressman Tom Reed was waging a war on women and cheered Reed when he argued against Robertson’s accusation.

Robinson started a question to Reed with “Tom Reed, you’re part of the war against women,” which caused members of the audience to groan incredulously and laugh.

Reed then responded to her allegations by stating that her premise was “false political rhetoric at its worst,” and argued that women were more concerned about the economic growth and opportunity.  He concluded his response by saying that “war on women” rhetoric was “offensive” and “just not accurate.”  After Reed’s response concluded, the audience applauded.

Reed was first elected to the seat in 2012, receiving about 52% of the vote.  In 2010, Democrat Bill Owens won with 48% of the vote to his challenger, Republican Matthew Doheny’s 46%.
