In an interview with Robert Klemko of Sports Illustrated, current NFL free agent and first openly gay NFL draft pick Michael Sam opened up about other gay pro athletes reaching out to him.
“There’s been a lot of closeted players not only in the NFL, but in other sports, too,” Sam told Klemko. “I’m not gonna reveal who they are. But it’s just motivating to see I’m not the only one. A lot of people, just because we play a ‘masculine sport,’ they think that there’s no gay players in the NFL. There’s a lot of us, but they need to feel more comfortable to come out when they’re ready.”
