WH to Texas: DOJ ‘Has Important Responsibility’ to Enforce Gay Marriage Ruling

Monday at the White House press briefing when asked about Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton saying individual clerks in his state can refuse to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples,  press secretary Josh Earnest said “obviously” the Department of  Justice has an “important responsibility to ensure that justice has been carried out all across the country.”

Earnest said “Well, obviously the Department of — as a general matter, the Department of Justice has an important responsibility to ensure that justice has been carried out all across the country. And again, I think the ruling from the Supreme Court was pretty clear to the millions of Americans that were obviously interested in their decision, but for, you know, what role the federal government would have in this case, I’d refer you to the Department of Justice.”
