Al Hunt: Trump Is ‘George Corley Wallace 40 Years Later’

Bloomberg View columnist Al Hunt dubbed Donald Trump “George Corley Wallace 40 years later” on Monday’s “Morning Joe” on MSNBC.

Hunt was asked about “A rising sense of indignation [among some Republicans] that this former Democrat, this contributor to Hillary Clinton, this single-payer healthcare supporting, populist is now seeming to grab a large chunk of the Republican base. What’s your take on what’s going on out there?”

Hunt answered, “This is George Corley Wallace 40 years later, Joe. I think the interesting thing about Trump right now is that his floor and his ceiling, in the Republican race, at least, they’re almost right next to each other. He’s not going to get much higher. But I talked to several Republicans over the weekend. What scares them half to death…is that he just — his ego might just cause him to run as an Independent. I doubt that’ll happen. If it does, it’s devastating for the Republican Party. That’s why they’re being so delicate with him right now.”
