Writer and podcast host Dan Savage stated that gay Republicans who support anti-gay marriage candidates are like “crazy people on the subway” and the relationship between the LGBTQ community and presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump is “complicated” on Monday’s broadcast of CBS’ “The Late Show.”

Savage was asked whether he has had conversations with gay Republicans who support candidates who are not in favor of same-sex marriage. He answered, “I have had conversations with those people, in the same spirit that I sometimes have conversations with crazy people on the subway. Some people are hard to understand.”

Earlier, Savage said, “Am I a fan of Caitlyn Jenner? Caitlyn Jenner was going to vote for [Sen.] Ted Cruz (R-TX), and I’m not typically a fan of people who are going to vote for Ted Cruz.”

Savage also described the relationship between the LGBTQ community and Donald Trump as “complicated. Because, I think Trump is a dangerous demagogue, and a racist, and will be bad for queer people if he gets elected. It’ll be bad for all Americans if he gets elected. … But he is — he has not really emphasized marriage equality, or discriminating against LGBT people. He actually said that he opposed laws criminalizing trans people using the bathrooms that are appropriate for them to use, and so, it’s kind of a mixed bag. Although, he’s surrounded himself with homophobes, like Ben Carson, like Chris Christie, and he’s promised to put people on the Supreme Court who will overturn marriage equality, and forcibly divorce me, because that’s pro-marriage. So, I don’t trust Trump in the long-term, but he’s not campaigned …”

He added that Democratic presidential candidate former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is “good on LGBT issues.” And that while she wasn’t always supportive of same-sex marriag,e “neither was Barack Obama. When you go to somebody, you go to a politician, and you say, ‘Please change your mind.’ When they change their mind, you don’t then spend the rest of their lives going, ‘[Bleep] you for not changing your mind sooner.’ You say, ‘Welcome to the right side of this issue. We’re glad to have you.'”
