ESPN’s Wiley: Police Shootings Like Alton Sterling and Philando Castile Have ‘Become Epidemic’

On Thursday’s broadcast of “SportsNation” on ESPN2, co-host and former NFL player Marcellus Wiley reacted to the recent fatal shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile at the hands of law enforcement, saying similar shootings have “become epidemic.”

“What we have to understand is, as President Obama said, there is a huge divide right now in the trust in the community, and I’m from a community that obviously is put on the map in not glowing terms of Compton, California. And, growing up in those surroundings and knowing that police were there to protect and serve and then all of a sudden some of the aggression, some of the abuse of power, some of the resentment that started to create because of our interactions, and that changed the course. It’s starting to now multiply in other cities all around our country. And it’s become epidemic. The most disturbing thing for me is I fit the profile,” Wiley said.
