On Friday’s broadcast of HBO’s “Real Time,” New Yorker Staff Writer Adam Gopnik argued, “American democracy will be in greater danger than it’s been since 1860 if Donald Trump were elected president.”

Gopnik said, “I think that American democracy will be in greater danger than it’s been since 1860 if Donald Trump were elected president. … I think that American democracy — all of us who believe in American democracy, and in constitutional conservatism will struggle to save America from Donald Trump, but I believe that no one can deny that Donald Trump is a classic example of someone who has contempt for all of the tripod that keeps our constitution and our country together. He has contempt for the truth. He has contempt for the legitimacy of the elected government, and he has contempt for anyone who he regards as an outsider.”
