Michigan Woman Claims Sam’s Club Refused to Put a Cross on Son’s Cake

Per a Fox 2 report, a woman claimed Sam’s Club in Southgate, MI denied her request for a cross on a cake.

“I was taken aback because I didn’t understand why they would write ‘God bless’ on there but couldn’t use a little bit of frosting to put the cross that I wanted,” Brandi Dypka told Fox 2.

“She said ‘I’m sorry we can’t do that’ I said is there a reason,” Dypka added. “And she said ‘Yeah we just don’t do the religious crosses on the cakes. We don’t pipe them.'”

Dypka also says she asked for a silver cross for the cake and was denied, despite the fact that the Sam’s Club catalog offers it.

She contacted corporate about her experience, only to get a less than desirable response.

“If you don’t like the cake, don’t purchase it,” part of the email read.

Dypka was appalled at the response, as was a spokeswoman for Sam’s Club, who said it was not an accurate reflection of the company which she says is inclusive and does not discriminate on any basis, let alone religion.

A few days later, Dypka returned to Sam’s Club and got her cake with a cross.

The spokeswoman wants to make it up to Dypka, but she would rather support local businesses now.

Sam’s Club released the following statement regarding the incident:

This should have never happened and we have reached out to apologize to Ms. Dypka. We’re proud to offer a number of cake options, including inspirational cakes with crosses. In this case, we could have done a much better job of communicating with the member about how to fulfill her specific request. We’re grateful she allowed us the opportunity to provide a cake she ordered in time for her son’s celebration.
