On Friday’s broadcast of HBO’s “Real Time,” host Bill Maher said that the controversies over Fox News Channel host Bill O’Reilly’s comments about Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA) that O’Reilly later apologized for and the spat between White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer and American Urban Radio Networks White House Correspondent and Washington Bureau Chief April Ryan are “little bullsh*t issues” and the focus on them is “why the Democrats lost the election in the first place.”

After Maher argued that former Democratic presidential nominee former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would “stay in the woods.” Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden pushed back that “lots of people are speaking out.” Maher responded, “Yeah, but what did she speak out about? She [spoke] out because Bill O’Reilly made a joke about Maxine Waters’ hair.”

Maher added, “You know what, this is why the Democrats lost the election in the first place. Because they cannot get their priorities straight, and they never fail to take the bait about little bullsh*t issues of –.” He further wondered why O’Reilly’s comment was considered racist.

Tanden then brought up the Spicer-Ryan tiff, and asked if Spicer would have treated a man the same way. Maher answered that he did think Spicer would treat a man the same way.
