Michelle Obama: ‘Nonsense’ to Tell it Like It Is, ‘You Don’t Tweet Every Thought’

Wednesday in Chicago at the Obama Foundation Summit, former first lady Michelle Obama said it was “nonsense” to tell it like it is by tweeting “your first initial thoughts.”

Obama said, “This whole ‘tell it like it is’ business — that’s nonsense. You don’t just say what’s on your mind. You don’t tweet every thought. Most of your first initial thoughts are not worthy of the light of day.”

After laughter from the audience, she continued, “And I’m not talking about anybody in particular. I’m talking about us all, because everybody does that.”

She added,”You need to think, and spell it right, and have good grammar, too.”

Referencing her time in the White House, Obama said, “You’re careful with your words. You’re careful with how you debate. And I think when you’re the first lady or the president, the commander in chief, and you have that voice, and that power, and that platform, I think what comes with that is the responsibility to know that every word you utter has consequences.”
