MSNBC’s Ali Velshi: ‘Donald Trump Needs a Lesson in Economics’

Thursday on MSNBC while reporting from Davos at the World Economic Forum, network host Ali Velshi said President Donald Trump needed “a lesson in economics.”

After running a clip of President Trump discussing trade deals, Velshi said, “The thing that Donald Trump doesn’t understand about economics and I hope somebody will brief him on it is that while you can rip up these trade deals and you can try and get these wages up in your own country, the bottom line is the consumer does get hurt. There’s a reason why people like to buy cheap goods from China in the United States. It does actually affect jobs. We have to come to terms with this and understand how to get manufacturing workers and co-workers retrained and reemployed.”

He continued, “The bottom line is you can’t rob Peter to pay Paul. Two things in the world going on, people want trade deals because it gives consumers options on lower prices, it also does remove high-wage jobs. I’m beginning to understand, a year in this presidency, that Donald Trump needs a lesson in economics.”

He added, “I thought it was just politics. I’m beginning to think he doesn’t get it.”
