The official press agency of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions has denounced the mass arrests, imprisonment, and “reeducation” programs imposed on participants in Hong Kong’s pro-democracy demonstrations of 2019.
Hong Kong Secretary for Security Chris Tang on Wednesday commanded the Hong Kong Journalists’ Association (HKJA) to hand over a list of all its members, where they are employed, and how many of them are students. Tang accused the HKJA of “infiltrating” schools and “recruiting” students for subversive activities.
Hong Kong police announced the arrests Tuesday of nine people after the alleged discovery of a weapons, explosives, and chemical cache authorities suspect was meant for use in bombing public areas. Six of those arrested are children.
Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam told reporters on Tuesday that she met with the losing pro-communist candidates in November’s District Council elections to apologize for their defeat and that it was “natural” for her to do so.
Chinese state media confirmed Thursday that Hong Kong Police Commissioner Chris Tang will visit Beijing this weekend for meetings at the Communist Party’s Public Security Ministry.
