North Korea May Be Preparing a Nuclear Test for Kim Il-Sung’s Birthday

North Korea has begun preparing festivities for the “Day of the Sun,” a holiday celebrating communist leader Kim Il-Sung. Satellite images suggest that among those festivities may be the nation’s sixth nuclear test, which would arrive at a particularly tempestuous time in the relationship between Pyongyang and its largest benefactor, China.

On Thursday, the North Korean government culminated the celebration of “Struggle Against US Imperialism Month” with a large stadium commemoration of the anniversary of the Korean War. South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) walked back its initial report that North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un brutally executed his defense minister Hyon Yong Chol for sleeping during meetings. Now they believe the dictator purged him, but he could still be alive.
