An illegal immigrant is dead after federal officials say he assaulted a Border Patrol agent in southwestern Arizona. The incident occurred shortly after noon local time Wednesday.

U.S. Border Patrol officials from the Tucson Sector say agents came upon a large group of suspected illegal aliens in the Baboquivari Mountain Range near Three Points. As one of the agents attempted to arrest the subjects, one of them became assaultive, according to information provided to Breitbart Texas by Border Patrol officials.

During the assault, the agent discharged his service-issued sidearm striking the foreign national at least one time. The suspect died from his wound(s). Agents successfully arrested three of the illegal immigrants while others escaped, officials stated.

A search continues for the other illegal immigrants involved in the incident.

Breitbart Texas reached out to Tucson Sector Border Patrol officials for further information about the nature of the assault and details about the illegal immigrants. No response was immediately available.

The shooting and assault are being investigated by the FBI, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility, and the Tohono O’odham Nation Police Department.

Less than one week ago, another Tucson Sector agent was assaulted by an illegal immigrant, Breitbart Texas reported. The 22-year-old Mexican national allegedly threw dirt in an agent’s face as the agent attempted to arrest him for illegally entering the country.

Another illegal immigrant in California was involved in a human smuggling attempt and allegedly assaulted a Border Patrol agent while attempting to circumvent a checkpoint in East County. The vehicle driven by the illegal alien struck a metal road sign that hit the agent in the head. The agent received an apparent concussion and was transported to a local hospital.

Attorney General Jeff Session has promised to step up prosecution of those who assault federal agents in the line of duty. Border Patrol agents are the most assaulted federal law enforcement officers.

In April, AG Sessions spoke to a group of Border Patrol agents and CBP officers in southern Arizona during a border tour, Breitbart Texas reported. During the speech, Sessions said, “In this fight, I am here to tell you, the brave men and women of Customs and Border Protection: we hear you and we have your back.” The U.S. Border Patrol is a subordinate agency under CBP.

Later in his speech, Sessions stated, “Finally, and perhaps most importantly: I have directed that all 94 U.S. Attorneys Offices make the prosecution of assault on a federal law enforcement officer — that’s all of you — a top priority. If someone dares to assault one of our folks in the line of duty, they will do federal time for it.”
