Governor Greg Abbott (R) canceled his “Texas made” shotgun giveaway in the wake of the May 18 Santa Fe High School shooting.

The giveaway, which featured a raffle for a shotgun, will now result in a $250 gift certificate for the winner.

The Dallas Morning News reports that Abbott campaign spokesman John Wittman confirmed Monday the shotgun aspect of the contest was canceled.

The decision came as gun control activists from March for Our Lives reacted to the Santa Fe High shooting by demanding Abbott end the giveaway.

Once Abbott capitulated, March for Our Lives Matthew Hogenmiller expressed gratitude and made clear he hopes the gift certificate winner will donate their winnings to Santa Fe victims.

Hogenmiller said, “We are happy that the governor has canceled his shotgun giveaway. We continue to plead that the money given to the winner is instead donated to the survivors’ funds in Santa Fe.”
