After reports that the Department of Justice has been monitoring Associated Press reporters communications, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney blamed the possible overreach on Republicans on Tuesday. Carney claimed that in 2007 then Senator Obama crafted legislation that would have protected the press from this type of overreach from the federal government. NBC’s Chuck Todd pointed out that in 2009, President Obama “killed” similar legislation when Democrats were in control of both the House and Senate. Carney rejected this assertion, saying that they were two different pieces of legislation and told Todd to “look at 2007.” Todd responded, “Who cares about 2007?”
