During Saturday’s broadcast of “AM Joy” on MSNBC, North Carolina NAACP President Rev. William Barber claimed the white evangelicals are engaging “in a form of heresy” by supporting GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump even though he has alleged violence towards women, wants to “take people’s health care” and “deny living wages.”
“What we see with the so-called evangelical right or white is a form of heresy, a form of theological malpractice. I’m an evangelical, and evangelicalism in the Bible starts with a critique of systems of poverty. It’s very easy,” Barber said.
Barber went on to quote Luke 4:18 of the Bible where Jesus Christ read from Isaiah the prophet where he said he was sent to preach to the poor and heal the brokenhearted.
He then added, “It is a strange form of theology that traces back to those who were able to support slavery on Monday, but then go to church on Sunday, where you somehow dismiss all of these issues. You dismiss a candidate that wants to take people’s health care. You say, ‘That’s Christian.’ When he wants to deny living wages, you don’t have any critique. Now, even with all this violence and pathology that’s being alleged toward women, and somehow you suggest as long as he’s right on the Supreme Court and prayer in school and tax cuts, that somehow that’s a Christian position. That’s actually theological malpractice that borders on heresy in the 21st century.”
