Wednesday at the Shared Value Leadership Summit in New York City, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, said being a capitalist “probably” hurt her with Democratic base voters who identify as socialists during the 2016 presidential election.

When asked if identifying as a capitalist hurt her, Clinton said, “Probably. You know, it’s hard to know but if you’re in the Iowa caucuses and 41 percent of Democrats are socialists—or self-described socialists—and I’m asked ‘are you a capitalist?’ and I say, ‘yes but with appropriate regulation and appropriate accountability,’ that probably gets lost in the ‘Oh my gosh she’s a capitalist!'”
